Does my Shawnee drainage fix depend on where my lot sits in the Mill Creek watershed?

It does, more than most homeowners realize. Shawnee's terrain drains toward Mill Creek and its tributaries, and your position in that watershed changes the problem you are actually solving. A lot down in the creek corridor sits at the receiving end — it takes concentrated stormwater from everything uphill, plus a creek edge that can rise during heavy rain. A lot up on the higher ground mostly deals with its own runoff on Johnson County clay that will not absorb it. Same city, same clay, two different drainage jobs — and matching the fix to your spot in the watershed is what keeps it from being wasted effort.

The corridor lots have a volume problem. When rain falls across the developed land uphill, the tight clay sheds almost all of it, and that combined runoff funnels down toward the creek — through low-lying yards if that is where the path runs. In a hard storm a rising Mill Creek can also back up low outlets, so water that should leave has nowhere to go. Drainage here is about conveyance capacity: moving a large volume through and off the lot quickly with catch basins and carried lines sized for the load, and keeping the creek's high-water edge from feeding back into the system. Upland lots are often solved with the lighter touch — grading to restore fall, downspout extensions carried past the foundation, and a modest interceptor where runoff crosses the yard. Corridor lots need the heavier build: higher-capacity conveyance, catch basins at the collection points, larger carried lines to a safe outlet, and sometimes protection from creek backwater. Shawnee's terraced terrain also puts walk-out basements at the low, exposed corner of many lots, and those catch whatever the slope delivers — so intercepting the flow above the walk-out wall is part of the plan where they exist. Cost follows how much water the lot has to move. A grading-and-downspout fix on an upland lot is the modest end; a high-capacity corridor system with catch basins, carried lines, and backwater protection runs higher, because it is built for volume.
